Welcome to LUU OperaSoc

If you were under the impression that opera was something only for professionals then think again! OperaSoc is a society that aims to introduce opera to as many people as possible and we welcome everyone to our rehearsals, even if you know nothing about opera.

We perform two shows every year in the Riley Smith Hall in the Union with full orchestras! All our performances are in English to make them as accessible as possible. In 2009-10 we performed Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and Gilbert & Sullivan's operetta The Pirates of Penzance, for which we received a five star review in the Leeds Student newspaper. Last year; Offenbach's La Belle Helene which, although not well known, was a lot of fun, and Gilbert & Sullivan's Iolanthe
(pictured). This year we are performing Mozart’s Don Giovanni in February, and Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado in the summer.

If you would like to join OperaSoc, the lead roles are auditioned (for those who want more of a challenge) but our chorus is non-auditioned, so experience is not necessary as we teach everybody together week by week. We almost always need players for the orchestra as well; if you'd like to play then get in touch. If you would like to be involved with our shows but feel performance isn't your thing then why not try joining the backstage team which includes props, stage management, lighting and more.

It's not all about the shows: we put on great socials too! These occur throughout the term and include regular bar trips, fundraisers and seeing fantastic productions from Opera North.

If you would like to find out more information about our shows or about joining then don't hesitate to contact us.
